Syzygy Ensemble's first concert begins in the depths of despair. Allow us to introduce to you two characters for whom life's journey was cut abruptly short, if it ever really began at all. Doomed to forever be prisoners, Bony Anderson and Eliza Donnithorne were simply removed from the daily experiences of life that most of us take for granted. These two chamber operas are both based on real people who lived out the remains of their pitiful lives in Sydney. Anderson, an unruly convict, chained to a rock on Goat's Island to be gawked at and taunted like a circus animal, and Miss Donnithorne, a jilted bride who returns to her dead father's house and remains there, still in her bridal gown, for the last 30 years of her life.
Syzygy's 2013 series, entitled 'Towards the Light' deals with enlightenment, and the often painful journey involved in achieving it. In a world full of misinformation, misdirection and heartache, how do we forge a path that leads towards knowledge, certainty and contentment? As musicians who deal joyfully with some of the best and most recent music that the world has to offer, we feel as though we are learning all the time and that our journey towards this elusive goal is never really complete. But thank goodness for that, because so long as we never reach Utopia, we never stop learning and growing.
