This one-act chamber opera is based on the Brother's Grimm Fairytale “The Wise Little Girl”. Ivan is a poor widow with a daughter. He sets off with his rich brother Dimitri to the annual Horse sales in the major city, as they are both horse breeders. Dimitri takes his Stallion, Ivan takes his Mare. During their journey a Foal is born. Both brothers claim it is theirs but can reach no agreement, so go before the judge in the city to settle their dispute. However on this day the Emperor is acting in the role of judge. This makes Ivan incredibly nervous and he ends up with a facial wink which offends the Emperor. As such riddles are set to the brothers. The brothers seek help from the women in their life to get answers to these riddles. They later present their answers to the Emperor. The Emperor is intrigued by the cleverness of Ivan's responses and demands to know where the answers came from. Ivan advises the Emperor they came from his daughter. The Emperor sets more riddles for the girl and she must present herself to the Emperor with these answers or her father will be killed. Will the Little Wise Girl meet the Emperor's challenge and saves her father's life?
