| Russian rag (1997) by Elena Kats-Chernin | A popular piece of moderate difficulty for clarinet and piano. Requires reasonable control of all registers on the clarinet, rhythmically manageable with a straightforward piano part. Middle section more demanding. (Suitable for HSC, AMEB grade 6/7). | |
| Prologue, Night piece and Blues for two (1968) by Don Banks | One of the most widely performed Australian clarinet pieces around the world. 1st movement requires rhythmic drive and accuracy, second movement calls for good intonation and musicianship and ability to start notes clearly and softly. 3rd movement is a rhythmically challenging blues. Intermediate difficulty. AMEB grade 6 (2nd movement grade 3). | |
| For clarinet and tape (1983) by Martin Wesley-Smith | A virtuosic work that can also be played on other instruments. Idiomatically written for the instrument and requires impeccable rhythmic sense from the player. | |
| Frenzy and folly, fire and joy (1999) by Graham Hair | A showy and relentless solo work in nine sections. Requires fast and fluid finger work. Suitable also for technically advanced HSC students. | |
| Tales of love suite (1990) by Richard Vella | A raucous, grungy 3-minute tango (from Tales of love suite) uses extended techniques: multiphonics, portamentos and glissandi and extremities of range. Suitable for an advanced HSC student capable of extended techniques. | |
| Verfrantz by Ingham, Stephen | Rhythmically driven piece (for clarinet, cello and piano, or, clarinet, cello and CD) with some very high notes for clarinet towards the end. Trio version requires some special attention to balance. |
