Alejandro Téllez performs both well known and overlooked Latin American Piano Music.
With works chosen from Mexican and Cuban composers, Téllez presents pieces that are well-known in Mexico but unfamiliar to the rest of the English speaking world. The elusive nature of the repertoire is attributed to the fact that the composers and their music whilst familiar in Mexican conservatories, are largely unknown outside the Latin world. Some of the music could only be found in second had bookstores in Mexico City, with one piece found to be hand written!
In this bold collection of 15 pieces the historical influences of European composition will be easily recognised alongside the mix of rhythms and repertoire one experiences in Mexico and Cuba. Some of the pieces selected for this recording - mainly Mexican and Cuban piano works - were originally performed alongside the premiere of works written by European composers, so an audience would hear Castro alongside Schumann! Whilst some contemporary pianists have slowly introduced some of these works into their repertoire, most of these pieces remain unknown outside of their countries of origin. In addition, Téllez' piano performance is a critical element to the compositions, as they all began at the keyboard.
A thorough and enlightening history of the repertoire are provided in the CD booklet. Alejandro Téllez deserves recognition not only for his performance of these works, but for introducing these rich pieces to the world outside of Latin America.
