This song was written in April 2022 to mark the end of Ascham schools' 150+ year-old Morton Bay Fig Tree. The fig tree was a majestic, central part of the school that was there before the school was founded.
As a long-serving staff member, it was a tree I had known and loved for over 40 years and very much part of my daily life, so I could not let it pass without some commemoration.
A cutting from that tree has now been planted in its place and this started me wondering if trees have memories? This inspired the words that are sung from the point of view of the tree?
Trees are things we often don't fully appreciate in our day-to-day lives, although more and more we recognise their absolutely fundamental place at the centre of life on our planet. "Long may they cover us with green!"
