Product details
This is a festive work with a substantial organ in mind for the accompaniment; one that has a solo trumpet stop. The part for this stop is sometimes written on a fourth stage for ease of reading. The choral parts are not overly complicated and would suit choirs of varying ability. This text has been set many times by composers since being penned in the late seventeenth century, not least of all by Henry Purcell (1659-95) for whom it was written and who set it in 1692. Purcell set the entire Ode on St Cecilia's Day. This work sets just an extract for a special occasion and is suitable for liturgical or concert use. It is interesting to note that the author of the text was Rector of the Church of St Katharine Cree in London that later became the Guild Church for the Guild of Church Musicians (established in 1888). The organ in that church is reputed to have been played by Handel, Boyce and indeed Purcell, as well as by the present composer. The work is an exuberant outpouring of joy and praise of the patron saint of music.
