Product details

Oodnadatta Who features alternating and simultaneously sung and blown elements, ever- changing metres, and fast polyphonic passages. A contrasting section brings a moment of respite, an oasis of shifting timbres and portamento in the midst of playful hocketing rhythms filled with existential riddles. Sustained notes on flute and voice provide an opportunity to revel in microtonal interference, alluding to shifting mental states, shimmering mirages and the throbbing heat of a desert.

Originally composed as a vox/shakuhachi work commissioned by Le Tuan Hung for the Australia Asia Foundation's 15th Anniversary of Sonic Gallery in 2019. Anne Norman premiered the vox/shakuhachi work in Lisbon in 2019. Flautist Katharine Rawdon was in the audience, Principal Flute of the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa. Katharine asked Anne to rewrite the work for Boehm-system flute. This Anne did during the First Lockdown on 2020 in Melbourne. This Vox/Flute work is therefore dedicated to Katharine Rawdon.

Also strongly influenced by Anne's shakuhachi training in Japan in the 80s and 90s and the subsequent decades of performance on shakuhachi.
