Product details

This piece grew out of a long-term study of the viability of neo-Riemannian triadic transform as a lens through which to understand changing harmonic functionality in contemporary tonal music. The harmonic profile of contemporary tonal repertoire is typically analyzed and understood using Schenkerarian-based harmonic nomenclature such as Roman numerals, figured bass and functional determinations derived from common-practice tonality (the tonality of Western music from the 17th to the 19th centuries). Where contemporary tonality, of any style, diverges from the Schenkerian functional paradigm, music theorist, musicologists and critics routinely struggle to understand and properly contextualize these differing functions (indeed, they are often understood as 'clumsy' or 'incorrect'). Neo-Riemannian transformational analysis is one avenue scholars have examined to identify alternate patterns of functionality in tonal repertoires.
