Work Overview
Celebration tries to capture something of the spirit of
festive times in Zimbabwe where many occasions are marked with
music and dancing. People come from far and wide to participate,
and as each group arrives, they perform their own dance while
others stand back and urge them on. As the music continues,
eventually everyone dances together.
Celebration takes as its starting point a traditional
Zimbabwean melody. This can be heard first as fragments in the
opening section and in its complete form in the final section of
the piece.
Celebration is written as a tribute to the future, when
Robert Mugabe is gone and the Zimbabwean people are once again
free to live their lives in peace.
