Violin and Piano Sonata No. 2 ‘Limbo’ Op. 49 : violin with piano

by Chloe Charody (2022)

Work Overview

A position like I have, where I present my art to the public, I believe bears a lot of responsibility. In a country like Australia, where so many people follow mainstream media which villainizes the world's most vulnerable people, refugees, I choose to use my platform as a composer to tell the stories of these people who are not just a statistic but innocent mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who have simply asked Australia for sanctuary.

Australia's answer to their plea has, for many, meant banishment to one of Australia's appalling off-shore detention facilities that strips these innocent people of their dignity and uses time as a form of torture under a strict policy of silence.

The crimes commitment against these people are slowing coming to light thanks to several volunteers, journalists, arts workers and survivors of these off-shore detention camps. Now that we know such crimes exist, how can we allow them to continue? Who is going to hold the Australian government accountable for their gross violation of the international refugee convention? If the European Union that upholds this is not going to, then the responsibility lies in the arts, for the role of the arts is to document history and to give a voice to the voiceless.

Violin and Piano Sonata No. 2 'Limbo' Op. 49 (composed 2022) is set at Melbourne Park Hotel in 2021, a time when many refugees were detained indefinitely, some having been incarcerated by the Australian Government for up to 9 years. If we think of what it was like to be stuck inside for several months due to the pandemic, imagine what it would feel like after 9 years.

This Sonata roller coasts through emotions of anger, frustration, boredom, fantasy & escape, exploding with one of the greatest weapons against oppression, hope.
