Piano Sonata no.2 : [eScore] / Gordon Kerry.
Work Overview
In 2021 Amir Farid and violinist Emily Sun gave several wonderful performances of my Violin Sonata in a tour, sadly curtailed by the pandemic, for Musica Viva Australia. When the opportunity to write a solo piano piece came up I thought immediately of the beautiful sonorities that Amir used in the earlier work, so I composed this piece with his sound in mind and have dedicated it to him.
It is in five linked sections, though certain material reappears, sometimes modified, in multiple sections. The first concentrates on 'liquid' sounds - slowly unfurling bass lines and the shimmer of tremolo chords. The second is the most substantial, given over in large part to different contrapuntal ideas, some ornate and some deliberately spare and uneasy. A brief reminiscence of the opening introduces the Misterioso 'slow movement' where lower register chords give way to higher bell tones. The short Deciso section uses spare octave writing and irregular metrical motifs before a brief shimmer (borrowed from the opening movement) that leads into a finale section in which the resonance of the instrument amplifies fairly simple diatonic harmony.
