Work Overview
The eleven songs in this set are taken from Poems by Robert Herrick selected and introduced by Jack Lindsay (London: The Grey Walls Press, 1948). They are all addressed to Herrick's imaginary ideal woman, Julia, and range in mood from playful to passionate. The final song (XI. The Transfiguration) is an apotheosis that contrasts Julia's earthly "counterfeit" with her ideal nature "set in thy refulgent thronelet" in heaven.
