The Princess and the Cello Alliance begins with a cavatina -a short song-like section, exploring modality in a contrapuntal style that allows each voice to express itself lyrically. The 2nd section is more robust and technically challenging. However, the 4th voice has been deliberately kept as simple as the music will allow in order that a student, or students, of a lesser technical ability can participate in the ensemble.
Instrumentation: Cello quartet or ensemble.
Duration: 5 min.
Difficulty: Medium — senior secondary school students
Commission note: Commissioned by the Sydney Suzuki Cello Institute

This work is in binary form. The slow, lyrical cavatina explores the octatonic scale. The 2nd energetic section, in D minor, draws on Vivaldi's string writing.
