Ransom for Brass Quintet was written in response to the beautiful and magical novel by David Malouf of the same name, Ransom. This novel, itself, is after books 22-24 of the epic poem The Iliad by the Ancient Greek writer and poet, Homer.

The music derives its melodic gestures and harmony from the augmented scale. This scale features in the late works of Takemitsu and Lutoslawski. It is also found in Messiaen's compendium of 'modes of limited transposition'.
