Work Overview
Giningininderry was commissioned by the Australian Society of Music Educators (ASME), and premiered at their National Conference in 2013, by Radford College Choir.
Giningininderry is based on the evolution of three words for place names on Ngunnawal and Ngarigo country, in the Canberra region extending into southern New South Wales. European settlers first documented the words as represented below, which have since been morphed into their current usage:
Gin-in-gin-in-der-ry : Gin-in-gin-der-ry : Gin-in-der-ra
(Creek)
Nga-mbri : Kem-bu-ry : Can-ber-ra
Moo-ling-go-lah : Mo-lo-ngo-lo : Mo-lo-nglo (River)
I do not know how accurate these early representations are to the Ngunnawal language that was spoken. However, as I walk this beautiful land I always discover more about the country and culture: so perhaps I (or you) will be gifted with that knowledge one day.
