Work Overview

Gentle Summer Rain for orchestra was composed by Margaret Brandman in 2022. Australia was experiencing its second consecutive La Nina weather event, with torrential rain and floods throughout the eastern seaboard of the country. The composer was hoping that the rains would ease into a more gentle rain event! It is a strongly melodic, harmonically rich, and rhythmically varied work. The introductory measures begin with the unifying motif played by the harp, wafting lightly as a summer breeze. This motif occurs several times throughout the work connecting the varying sections. The first four sections of the work are through-composed each with a contrasting mood, with a satisfying return to the opening thematic material in the final section.

The work opens in G and then transitions through the tonal levels of D minor, F Major, and E Mixolydian, finishing in the bright key of E Major. The harmonic palette throughout the work is varied with chromatic progressions and chordal extensions.
