Work Overview
Whirligig was written in 1983 to demonstrate and exploit the great agility and flexibility of the clarinet. After some pyrotechnical display, a short repeated motif comes into prominence. This motif is later picked up and developed further in the companion piece Gorlywhorl, which is intended to follow and complement Whirligig.
