Four studies in musical motion - unified by the same tempo,
metre, rhythmic motif (q jjjq) and 5-pitch whole-tone motif
(A-G-A-B-F: transposed according to mode).
Instrumentation: Piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais, piccolo clarinet in E flat, 3 clarinets in B flat, alto clarinet in E flat, bass clarinet in B flat, contrabass clarinet in B flat (optional), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, soprano saxophone, 2 alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 2 cornets in B flat, 4 trumpets in B flat, 4 horns in F, 2 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium in B flat, tuba in C, double bass (optional), harp, piano, timpani, percussion (4 players).
