Work Overview
A glimpse of the essential idea of the work is given through the title, which indicates the underlying tendency driving the process of the work in a particular direction - or, more accurately, towards widening directions. The source of this tendency is not in the clarinet's material but the presence of the tam-tam and the situation that results from that presence. The tam-tam is not integrated with the contrabass clarinet - its sound exists outside of it and acts as an external force that sets the clarinet's sound-events in motion. In other words, the tam-tam provokes the clarinet into action.
