Work Overview

Zhungkui is a fictitious character in Chinese legend who was able to catch ghosts after he was drunk. This work is inspired by a series of pictures depicting the story of Zhungkui, painted by Song Dynasty painter Liang Kai. The artist's sparing brush-work style is reflected by using unmeasured long phrases and a isolated figures as basic musical elements to depict the picture with movement and interest.
Written in 1988, this piece premiered in 1989. Following performances in Seoul in 1994 and Sydney in 1995, this work was awarded the 'Himalaya Cup' in the First International Competition of Piano Composition in Beijing in 1995.
