For SATB and organ, this anthem takes its text from the Psalms (13:5; 44:26; 57:11; 71:20; 77:1, 3, 5-6, 8, 11, 13-15, 18; 100:4). These words are rich with human emotion and angst. They lend themselves to a very dramatic setting. Here there are moments not unlike choral recitative, and others of exclamation that might be found in a cantata. The organ lends colour, heightening the emotion. There are also moments of lyric tunefulness.
