A Hermit Crab Lifestyle : for solo double bass / Christine Pan.
Library shelf no. 787.5/PAN 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
This work for solo double bass was first composed back in 2017 to celebrate introversion. Wanting to be invited to a social gathering then wanting to stay in bed when the time comes, hanging out with the pets at a party while attaching oneself to the snacks table, learning how to socialise again after lockdown; these are all daily vignettes into the life of an introvert.
The piece aims to combine aspects of jazz and art music techniques in a whimsical manner. It explores the various timbres of the Double Bass, pivoting between rhythmic syncopation and metrically freeing sections. This piece started out as personal reminder that I need to go outside.
During the revision of this work over the course of lockdowns due to the recent pandemic, the music shifted to mean something else to me; a need for connection and community at a time when we are unable to leave our homes. A Hermit Crab Lifestyle is ultimately an acknowledgement of the human need to have quiet times alone as well as quality time with others in order to live a healthy lifestyle.
