Work

Looking back : for violin, viola, cello and double bass

by Peter Sculthorpe (2001)

Work Overview

Looking Back is lovingly dedicated to Malcolm Williamson, upon his seventieth birthday.

I first met Malcolm in my parents' house, over fifty years ago. At the time, Malcolm was pianist for the Borovansky Ballet on its Australia-wide tour. Following a performance in Launceston, Tasmania, my parents and I gave a party for the company. Many years later, I introduced my mother to Malcolm's mother and the two became friends. My friendship with Malcolm, then, seems almost familial, quite apart from the fact that we are now, with others of our age, at the head of the family of Australian composers. Our friendship has been constant, one that is always full of good humour. My only regret is that, living half a world away, the time that we spend together is too rare.
