Work Overview
This piece makes use of the first two bars of Schumann's first Kinderszenen. It is intended to track the development of a childhood memory through a person's life. The first two bars constitute the childhood memory. It was commissioned by the astounding Freshwater Trio, so it was written to exploit their unique and intimately conversational style of musical communication. It makes use of some extended techniques, as well as the Schoenbergian idea of Hauptstimme and Nebenstimme to clarify primacy amongst the parts.
