Work Overview
A three-movement, 46-minute pacifist reflection on the sorrow brought by the folly of war, based on the sinking in sea battle of both HMAS Sydney and the HSK Kormoran, with terrible loss of life on both sides. The work was commissioned by the Tolmie family in memory of Frederick Edwards (father to Margaret Tolmie and grandfather to Rachel), who was a crew member of HMAS Sydney, and who died in the battle. The concerto is scored for solo cor anglais and full orchestra, with a soprano soloist in the Elegy singing the poignant words of Kerry O'Regan about the sorrow of war.
