Stepping Stones, a new education resource for senior secondary and tertiary music students, is now available from the Australian Music Centre. The education kit, prepared in cooperation with Ensemble Offspring, Sibelius and MLC School in Sydney, provides learning resources and live listening experiences for years 9 to 12. To take up our special offer, which entitles your students to discount tickets to the Sibelius Composer Awards concert (26th October) as well as to attend free rehearsals with Ensemble Offspring, please check out the attached pdf flyer. The price of the Stepping Stones kit is $85 (AMC Members Price $76.50).

The first section of Stepping Stones is an investigation of a recent work, Same Steps, by the Australian composer Damien Ricketson. The analysis focuses on the concept of the open form in contemporary classical composition and introduces students to many new musical devices such as unconventional musical notation and the use of microtones. Practical activities and further listening complement the analysis. The second section investigates the works of the four student finalists from the 2007 Sibelius Student Composer Competition.

The recordings are made by Ensemble Offspring, an ensemble dedicated to innovative music and one of the country's most active promoters of new Australian composition.

Don't forget that the entries for the 2008 Sibelius Composer Awards for students and emerging composers close on Monday, 15th September. More information about the awards is available on the Sibelius website.

The Australian Music Centre connects people around the world to Australian composers and sound artists. By facilitating the performance, awareness and appreciation of music by these creative artists, it aims to increase their profile and the sustainability of their art form. Established in 1974, the AMC is now the leading provider of information, resources, materials and products relating to Australian new music.
