For all its moments of tenderness, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is, in the composer’s words, ‘a foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound’. In this rare MSO appearance, Simone Young also conducts the Australian premiere of Brett Dean’s new work, based on the life and teachings of Socrates, commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
