This resource kit is geared towards elective music in secondary schools, and can also be used at a tertiary level. It fits well into current syllabus requirements for the study of Australian music and study of an Australian journey.
Journey to Horseshoe Bend is a cantata which had its first performance in 2003 by the Sydney Symphony, drawing on an extraordinary public response and critical plaudits. It is based on the novel by T.G.H. Strehlow which recalls the journey and weaves together a teenage boy's narrative of landscape and isolation with the adult Strehlow's insight into Arrernte history and mythology.
"The old missionaries tried to stamp out the old ways, taught new songs; but fortunately they preached 'in language', and preservation has enabled not only a more recent resurfacing of tradition but Hermannsburg's unique cultural blend. Our work reflects some of this, being composed in the three languages of the area." Gordon Williams
The resource kit assumes a certain amount of background musical knowledge and literacy. It assumes knowledge of intervals, keys, chords, rhythms, and aspects of music notation (including contemporary notation devices). Teachers may need to guide students through some of these concepts.
The Teachers' Book offers an indepth analytical discussion including a wider range of material, covering the musical elements and concepts used by the composer Andrew Schultz and the librettist Gordon Williams. At the end of the discussion there is a set of suggested activities for the classroom: questions, musicology/composition activities, score reading and listening activities, and performance and analysis activities. These activities offer a starting point for discovering musical concepts as well as functioning as a springboard for creative activity.
