He Gives His Beloved Sleep / music: Andrew Anderson ; text: Psalm 127:1-2.
Library shelf no. 782.55294/AND 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
The anthem is a setting of Psalm 127:1-2. There has been debate as to how "sleep" in verse 2 should be translated, so it is of note is that this setting incorporates two versions (the choir and solo soprano singing "for so he giveth his beloved sleep", with a solo baritone answering "he giveth even as they sleep").
Text (derived from the King James Version):
"Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep (he giveth even as they sleep)."
