Work Overview
The form of the work was inspired by the meteorological phenomena known as an air mass. An air mass can best be described as a large body of air that has similar temperature and moisture properties throughout. There are many different types of air mass and with each variety comes different weather. They can bring anything from scorching heat to bone-chilling cold depending on the type of air mass. Air masses typically clash in the middle latitudes, producing some very interesting weather.
The air mass struck me as a somewhat poignant metaphor for wind ensemble, especially when coupled with percussion.
I have drawn from five different types of air mass as a vehicle for the piece. Each one represented by a different section or movement.
1st Movement: Cold and dry air masses with very little moisture responsible for extremely low temperatures.
2nd Movement: Cool and moist air masses usually bringing storms, cloudy and damp weather
3rd Movement: Warm and moist air masses producing tropical, hot and humid weather
4th and 5th Movements: represent the middle latitudes, a clashing of continental polar air masses and maritime tropical air
