Uluru : for SSA chorus and orchestra, a Tjukurpa for the modern world, a Kurunba of Uluru / music: Rod Christian ; edited by Perry Joyce ; lyrics: Rod Christian et al.
Library shelf no. 782.5542/CHR 1 [Available for loan]
In this composition I have tried to capture many aspects of Uluru. The opening depicts the very beginnings of Uluru millions of years ago. You hear the instruments "summoning" the spirits, calling the Anangu people along the song lines or tracks. Then, the spectacular sunrises, the beauty, the awe inspiring landscape, the birdlife, the creatures, the stars at night.
During the choral section which follows, we learn of the culture, the spiritual aspects and the meaning of the language, the legends, then the often harsh elements, the rocks and caves, the floods, the birdlife, the creatures, and the relentless sun during the day.
Instrumentation: SSA chorus, 3 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons, 3 horns in F, 2 trumpets in B flat, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (2 players), strings. Solos for oboe, flute, clarinet and cor anglais.
Duration: 9 min.
Difficulty: Medium — Some challenging sections that require solid rehearsals.
Dedication note: Dedicated to the Senior Chorale and Orchestra at Methodist Ladies College Claremont, WA, under the direction of Dr Robert Faulkner
First performance: by Methodist Ladies College (WA) Orchestra and Chorale, Robert Faulkner at MLC at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Switzerland (St Martin's Church, Vevey (Switzerland)) on 5 Jul 2017
