Australian Music on ABC Classic FM in May 2012

Australian Music on ABC Classic FM in May 2012

This month's concert broadcasts on ABC Classic FM feature world premieres from Andrew Schultz (for vocal chamber group Halcyon and for the Australia Ensemble) and from Peter Sculthorpe for the Southern Cross Soloists on texts by another grand cultural figure and Australia's only literary Nobel laureate, Patrick White. There are also broadcasts of substantial recent chamber works from composers Paul Dean, Michael Kieran Harvey and Gordon Kerry, and the first national appearance of emerging composer Catherine Sullivan with a work broadcast live from this year's MSO Metropolis Festival.

New Music Up Late broadcasts include a look at the 2011 International Rostrum of Composers, featuring new works from Australia and around the world, along with a preview of this year's Australian entry. And there are more Australian concerts on New Music Up Late throughout the month, including the delayed broadcast of 'A Voice from the Dark Space', Perth's Decibel New Music Ensemble presenting a program inspired by landscapes remembered, imagined or actual, with new and recent music by Lindsay Vickery, Julian Day, Alan Lamb and Cat Hope.

On Music Makers (Sunday lunchtimes) in May, hear Australian composer and internationally acclaimed festival director Jonathan Mills giving this year's Barbara Blackman lecture and catching up with presenter Christopher Lawrence as their paths cross at the Canberra International Music Festival.

In webland you can listen to the latest addition to our classic/amp collection, Gerard Brophy's Gethsemane, performed by the Song Company, Synergy Percussion and saxophonist Christina Leonard, and this year's ABC entry for the prestigious Prix Italia for radiophonic music composition. And the Australian Music Unit podcast (http://www.abc.net.au/classic/program/australian-music/podcast.htm) presents Fresh Meat: emerging composers Amy Bastow, Melody Eötvös, Annie Hsieh, Anthony Moles, Nicole Murphy, Mark Oliveiro, Luke Paulding, Alex Pozniak, Timothy Tate, Joseph Twist, Chris Williams and Mark Wolf, with self-selected recent chamber works representative of their compositional thinking.
