On March 15 and 29, Halcyon proudly presents Kingfisher, Songs for Halcyon - a seminal commissioning project to celebrate 15 years of music making by Australia’s leading ensemble for vocal chamber music.
Halcyon, a fabled bird identified with the kingfisher, had the power to calm the wind and the waves while it nested on the sea during the winter solstice. The composers have taken their inspiration from 'halcyon' in some way, each displaying their own unique voice in writing for singers and instruments. The 22 songs represent the cream of vocal composition in Australia currently and offer a lasting tribute to the relationships formed between Halcyon and the composers who have written for them over the years.
The complete collection of these miniature works of art will be premiered across two separate twilight concerts (different programs) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Artists for the Kingfisher project are Alison Morgan (soprano), Jenny Duck-Chong (mezzo soprano), Laura Chislett Jones (flutes), Jason Noble (clarinets), Geoffrey Gartner (cello) and Jess Ciampa & William Jackson (percussion).
