Georgina Bowden : Associate Artist
"Georgina is a British-born composer and visual artist with a
background in Architecture, living in South Australia. Inspired
by the visceral qualities of modernism, her music
cross-pollinates various artforms. In 2024 and 2025 she composed
for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Offspring and
Musikfabrik Trio. She has been described as "an original, bold
and mature artistic voice", and performances of her music "highly
memorable" with "visual and aural intrigue".
Georgina likes to convey ideas from sciences, arts and politics
with a visceral legibility. Influenced by Juhani Pallasmaa's
philosophy of architecture being understood through multisensory
experience, she composes music where meaning is intended to be
felt rather than deciphered intellectually.
Georgina's music is performed across Europe and Australia,
recently Ensemble Musikfabrik's studio in Cologne, Hannover New
Music's Zeitlupe series, Ostrava Days Festival in Czechia, the
Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's multimedia concert, and Ensemble
Offspring's Future Classics at Sydney Opera House. In 2026, her
piece Catalyst was premiered as part of the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra's Cybec 21st Century composers program. The piece
explored the extrapolation of bass drum overtone resonances,
spreading and playing with the sound across an orchestra.
Some of Georgina's multi-artform creations so far include a
concerto for artist and orchestra (Wild Colour), spatial and
site-specific music for large ensemble, with live sound
processing (Revelations), graphic scores playing with the
representation of microtones and dynamics (Yaban Ariları), and a
piece for cello and video (Flex).
Georgina has tutored and been a critic in music, architecture,
and art, including at the University of South Australia, Coventry
University and her own art workshops.
Reviews of Georgina's work:
"... based on a deep understanding of the nature, character and
possibilities of these instruments. In its metaphoric dimensions
and strong sound constellations ""Figure-ground"" is still
burning in my mind."
- Dr. Egbert Hiller
"We were mesmerised right from the initial vibrant bass drumbeats
and dynamic rhythmic percussion ... a supersonic upper string
effect first on solo violin, then two, then three, then four
violins joining seamlessly, then shifting pitch and moving across
the string sections, adding visual and aural intrigue. A highly
memorable composition."
- Julie McErlain, Classic Melbourne
"Georgina Bowden approaches the ensemble as a percussive
playground in Magnetic Fields, incorporating col legno on the
double bass, slap-tongue on the clarinet, and even knitting
needles. It was the boldest work of the program, with Bowden
unafraid to finesse sound in its most naturalistic form."
- Charlotte Leamon, LIMELIGHT"
