Angie Coffey : Associate Artist

Embracing the awareness of how extraordinary it is to experience life, I stand against ‘numb’. I strive for a very expressive, beautiful and unique sound that fuses the traditional with a modern process and accessibility with sophistication.

The world around us is physical but what informs how we see it, is how we feel. Composer Angie Coffey stands against "numb" and instead embraces the awareness of how extraordinary it is to experience life.

Angie is a Melbourne composer with a classical background known for her expressive music that resonates impactfully with her audience.

In a recent interview with the Australian Music Centre, when asked if any Australian artists or works had inspired him lately, Joe Chindamo replied: "I've been inspired by Angie Coffey, a Melbourne composer who writes such beautiful songs. I had the pleasure of reimagining one of them recently."

In 2020 Angie was recognised through her nomination in the category Best Music for an Advertisement for the APRA 2020 Screen Music Awards, with her "Women Run" soundtrack.

Since 2019 Angie has been composing and producing a suite of songs and instrumental pieces inspired by the fantasy trilogy- the Rapunzel's Sister Series, an ongoing project, founded by author Belinda Lui. Recent releases from it have included collaborations with renowned and diverse artists including Grigoryan brothers, Simon Tedeschi, Zoe Black, Sarah Curro, Christopher Moore, Joe Chindamo, Olivia Chindamo, David Berlin, Ben Hanlon, Jess Hitchcock Nathan Slater, Kaylie Melville, David Jones, Jacob Abela, Harrison Craig, Janine Maunder, Harriet Allcroft and Clancye Milne, Nathan Slater, Kathleen Halloran, Toby Dundas and Alex Smirneos.

Recently Angie was commissioned by concert pianist Catherine Broadstock to compose a piece that will receive its premiere as part of her "Poetry and Music" series. The piece is entitled "The Mirror" after a poem by Rosemary Dobson and Catherine will perform it in late 2024 at her "Australian Landscape in Poetry and Music" concert.

Angie's compositions have been broadcast and heard through large and small screens and from theatrical stages over decades- including Playbox theatre, (Alex Buzo's "Pacific Union" directed by Bruce Myles, and Peta Murray's "Salt" directed by Aubrey Mellor), and many national and international campaigns.

She holds a Bachelor of Music (Melbourne University) and a Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Music (LaTrobe University).
