Angie Coffey : Associate Artist

I compose music shaped by feeling, lyricism and the richness of lived experience. My work blends clarity of line with modern expressivity, seeking music that feels alive, generous and emotionally direct

Angie Coffey is a Melbourne composer whose music is shaped by emotional awareness, clear melodic writing and the sense of vitality that comes from lived experience. Her work centres on melody and counter melody-independent lines that converge into a tensile lyricism-reflecting her interest in how feeling shapes perception.

With a particular affinity for strings, Coffey often composes with specific performers in mind, valuing the collaborative relationships that bring each work to life. She embraces the space for listeners to contribute their own interpretations-what she describes as their "beholder's share." Pianist Joe Chindamo has spoken of being inspired by her work, describing her compositions as "such beautiful songs" in a recent interview with the AMC.

Coffey is currently composing and producing a suite of songs and instrumental works inspired by The Rapunzel's Sister series. Recent releases include Gone for flute and viola (2025); Phantasy for violin and viola (2024); Draevon for string trio (2024); and Starfly for piano and two violins (2024/2023). Draevon received its world premiere in the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Chamber Music Series in May 2025, performed by Transfigured String Trio at Hanson Dyer Hall.

Her collaborators include the Grigoryan Brothers, Simon Tedeschi, Joe Chindamo, Olivia Chindamo, Zoe Black, Sarah Curro, Christopher Moore, Molly Kadarauch, Eliza Shephard, David Berlin, Ben Hanlon, Jess Hitchcock, Nathan Slater, Kaylie Melville, David Jones, Jacob Abela, Harrison Craig, Janine Maunder, Harriet Allcroft and Kathleen Halloran.

Upcoming premieres include Lyrebirds for pianist Catherine Broadstock and The River for Transfigured String Trio (2026). Coffey continues to expand her work for larger forces, with new ensemble and orchestral projects forming a growing part of her practice.

Earlier career highlights include a nomination for Best Music for an Advertisement at the APRA Screen Music Awards for Women Run (2020), along with music for theatre, television and cinema. Coffey is an Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre and a composer member of APRA AMCOS. She is also a member of Katy Abbott's Catapult Collective, holds a Bachelor of Music in composition from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Contemporary Music Technology from La Trobe University.
