Looking Glass Images : Suite for Horn Duet / Fred Hill.
Library shelf no. 785.9412/HIL 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
This suite draws its title and inspiration from the central chapter in Alice Through the Looking-Glass. The opening movement "Tweedledum and Tweedledee" is a lively series of antiphonal exchanges in which the two horns echo each other's utterances in a quick-fire patter. The second "The Walrus and the Carpenter" evokes a bleak beach-scape lit by the midnight sun. "The Red King's Dream", which follows, mirror's Alice's fear that she will disappear when the King wakes up. The finale "The Battle - and the Monstrous Crow" opens with calls and responses between the two soloists, followed by a brief confrontation which is broken up by the appearance of the crow, in octaves, fff.The suite ends with a coda taken from the first movement as the two "heroes" beat a hasty retreat.
