Hamlet was premiered at Glyndebourne Festival in June 2017, directed by Neil Armfield with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (who was awarded the Conductor of the Year prize at the Opera Awards). After the premiere, the UK press described the work as '... a dark, complex, sometimes wryly postemodern slant of the play' (Financial Times)', and 'a magnificent new opera' (The Times). Dean's score was described as 'brilliant music, rapturously received... the forceful duets, ensembles and choruses... highlights of the score' (Daily Telegraph).
The Glyndebourne production went on to tour the UK later in 2017 and got its Australian premiere at the 2018 Adelaide Festival in March, conducted by Nicholas Carter.
