Tom Anderson : Associate Artist

Anderson is a composer of piano ragtime influenced by Scott Joplin. His aim is to write good, original ragtime for listeners and pianists to enjoy writing at intermediate level accessible to most performers whether students or seasoned veterans.

Anderson was born in Sydney in 1955. From 1973 he spent 10 years with private teachers learning classical piano, jazz and ragtime attaining 7th grade in performance including such pieces as Maple Leaf Rag and Miriam Hyde's Woodland Sketch.

He started composing in 1986 and has written over 20 ragtime piano pieces, 14 piano miniatures including the acclaimed Waterfall, numerous songs and has collaborated on two flute and piano suites, one violin and piano suite and a successful Mass.

Anderson's piano rags won first, second and third prizes in the Australian Songwriters Association Contests (instrumental category) of 2017 and 2018. He has had two albums of piano ragtime published including Hello! It's Ragtime (2021)

Australian concert pianist and composer John Martin released an album of Australian piano music Rhythms of Green and Gold (2022) including one of my ragtime pieces A Walk Down Ragtime Lane.

In 2022 Anderson composed Lament for Elizabeth in response to the death of Queen Elizabeth II and sent it to Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace. Princess Anne said it was "a beautiful piece of music" and "was pleased to hear that it had been deservedly well received".

Anderson plays piano at his local church and organises a monthly concert at his retirement village where he plays with six other musicians entertaining about 30 residents.
