Andrew Ball is a composer and saxophonist based in Brisbane, Australia. With a bold and unique compositional voice, described as highly kinetic, visceral, rhythmically intricate and harmonically colourful, Andrew draws inspiration from an eclectic variety of jazz and improvised music, contemporary classical, avant-garde, and electronic musics. His unique approach to composition deliberately extends the limits of instruments and their performers, and aims to challenge attitudes and ideologies surrounding context and genre.

Andrew continues to enjoy a busy and diverse career performing, writing and educating. As a saxophonist, he holds his L.Mus.A with distinction, and B.Mus with First Class Honours from the Queensland Conservatorium. He regularly performs with, and writes for, the Barega Saxophone Quartet, Bullhorn brass band, Cheap Fakes, and Nomika, in addition to his own solo saxophone project.

Andrew has seen his work premiered internationally by a variety of artists, and has recently completed large-scale commissions for ensembles including The Australia Ensemble @UNSW, Hourglass Ensemble, Australian Saxophone Orchestra, Collusion, and Queensland Youth Orchestras.

Andrew has appeared in performances alongside artists including Laurie Anderson, Natalie Cole, Ash Grunwald, and Kupkas Piano, and as a concert soloist with the Queensland Wind Orchestra and Divertimenti Strings. In 2017, Andrew launched his solo project with the release of his album Forbidden Languages (through Made Now Music), a suite of genre-defying original works for extended and prepared saxophones.

Recordings of Andrew's work can be found on Barega Sax Quartet's albums Abandon Control and Three Serpents, Andrew Ball Quartet's Space and Time, Nomika's Motion, Cheap Fakes' Deep Space, His Merry Men's Kind of Loud, Collusion's I read the old dream slowly, QLD Saxophone Orchestra's Australian Made, as well as his solo album Forbidden Languages, released late 2017 through Made Now Music.
