Naomi Brown : Associate Artist

My music is neoclassical and cinematic in style, often inspired by poetry. I aim to take the listener on a journey, to tell a story and stimulate the imagination. Some of my music is more contemplative.

Naomi Brown, an Australian composer, is renowned for her classical music with a cinematic style, often inspired by poetry. Her compositions tell stories or evoke vivid imagery. Naomi's music has been performed by esteemed ensembles like the Flinders Quartet and virtuoso double reed players such as Matthew Kneale, Rachael Bullen, and Mark Gaydon. Her work has graced venues including the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, St Paul's Cathedral, Urrbrae House, and has been streamed on the Australian Digital Concert Hall.

Recently, Naomi composed "The Sea and the Skylark" for bassoonist Matthew Kneale, based on Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem. This piece premiered at Tempo Rubato in June 2023, performed by Kneale and oboist Rachael Bullen. Another recent work, "Rivers and Thoughts," inspired by Miriam Wei Wei Lo's poem "A Few Thoughts on Multiple Identity," debuted in May 2022 in Adelaide, featuring Matthew Kneale, Mark Gaydon, and Yundi Yuan on piano.

Previously, Naomi composed a significant work for bassoon and string ensemble, inspired by Francis Thompson's poem "The Hound of Heaven," commissioned by Matthew Kneale. A movement from this piece was adapted for bassoon and piano and performed at the Sydney Opera House during the Freedman Music Awards by Kneale and Yundi Yuan in July 2022. It was also performed as part of a concert by Ensemble Francaix which was streamed live on the Australian Digital Concert Hall in October 2022.

Naomi's string quartet "Fractured Peace" was commissioned by the Flinders Quartet for their Beethoven and the Vignettes project, performed in November 2022 at the Melbourne Recital Centre and other venues. The Flinders Quartet also performed her quartet "A Storm in the Mountains" as part of their inaugural Composer Development Program.

Her choral work "Welcome" was written for St Paul's Cathedral choir and featured in their December 2022 carol service. Additionally, her piece "A Poet's Home" was chosen by the Grainger Wind Symphony for their annual Made in Australia concert in September 2022.

Naomi completed a nine-piece piano solo suite, "The Orchard," recorded by pianist Kay Cai and released on Spotify under the moniker Contemplative Cadences. She is currently working on another suite, "Bright Wings and Dappled Things," based on Gerard Manley Hopkins' poems.

Naomi has received rigorous training in music composition from film composer Amy Jørgensen, known for her work on "Deepsea Challenge 3D," "Home & Away," and "Bluey."
