Sebastian Collen : Associate Artist

Photo of Sebastian Collen

Sebastian Collen is an Adelaide-based composer and musician, currently completing his doctoral studies at Elder Conservatorium of Music. Writing predominantly for chamber ensembles, his musical style is influenced by his ongoing interest in Neoplasticism, and in abstraction through simplicity in colour and geometry.

As part of his research he is working on writing microtonally textured pipe organ music, using the mechanics of the instrument to manipulate pitch and timbre through extended performance techniques. Sebastian also works with electronic music, particularly sound-art based on hardware and circuit bending.

Sebastian has studied under Graeme Koehne, Charles Bodman Rae and Stephen Whittington, as well as attending masterclasses with numerous acclaimed composers. He has had works premiered by eminent musicians and ensembles. These include the Australian String Quartet, pianist Anna Goldsworthy; the Soundstream Collective; leading members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra; and cellists Ewen Bramble and Marko Ylönen.

Having a passion for multidisciplinary collaborations, Sebastian enjoys creating work with a range of artists, especially dancers and creative writers. When not composing, Sebastian is an organist and conductor, working with several orchestras and choirs around Adelaide. An early music enthusiast, he also performs occasional baroque concerts with a small chamber ensemble. He is principal organist at Crafers Church of the Epiphany.
