Phillip Cullen : Associate Artist

Phillip Cullen is an Australian composer based in Helsinki where he is completing master's studies in music theory at the Sibelius Academy. He is there with the support of the Sydney Moss and Finland scholarships. He completed undergraduate studies in composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, graduating in 2022 with first class honours.

Cullen's music was selected for the 2021 Artology Fanfare Competition. In 2023 he was selected to participate in AYO's National Music Camp as a composer, and later that year was the winner of the Ralph Morton Memorial Choral Composition Competition. In 2025 he was a recipient of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Emerging Composer Award and was commissioned to write A Nativity for mixed choir and chamber orchestra, which was performed at the Sydney Opera House later that year. In 2026 he was announced as the winner of the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference Composition Competition, and his piece Aquarium was premiered at the finalists' concert in Elder Hall.

Also a seasoned chorister, Cullen was a member of Sydney Philharmonia's VOX from 2022 to 2024, and has also performed with Ad Lib New Music Choir, the Sibelius Academy Choir, the Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Choir and the Sydney Conservatorium Choir.
