Dev Gopalasamy was the Director of Music at St Joseph's College in Hunters Hill (Sydney) for 10 years, and was later the Head of Performing Arts at St Ignatius' College Riverview for 14 years from 2005 to 2018.
Dev is a composer, arranger, a M.A.G.A. certified composer/arranger, and guitar player who has had two Aria nominations, four Mo Award nominations, and has received a Honorary Professional Composer's award from APRA. Dev has three university degrees and his compositions and performances are showcased on four commercially released albums under his name. These are available on most digital platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. All but two pieces on these four albums were composed and arranged by Dev.
Amongst Dev's latest compositions are a symphony ("The Refugee Symphony") written for a full orchestra, and various pieces for international film and orchestral score competitions. Previous compositions also include works in the following genres: Jazz, Classical music, World Music, Electronic music, Indian Music and Rock. A list of over 50 of his compositions for small and large ensembles are registered with APRA.
Dev has written and/or arranged music for four Australian feature films, TV documentaries, jingles, cabaret artists and CD recordings. His compositions and performance on his album Tazzad are listed on the National Heritage list labelled as "Uniquely Australian". These are archived in the National Heritage library.
In the area of Education, Dev has written numerous pieces for HSC students and school ensembles over a period of 35 years in a multitude of genres.
Tommy Emmanuel commented that Dev is "one of the finest guitar players in Australia". Dev has worked with the cream of Australian Jazz musicians and with many international artists who toured Australia, one of the highlights being the support for the legendary Jazz artist Dizzy Gillespie on his Australian Tour.
Dev is also a conductor and has conducted many Combined Schools' Symphony Orchestras and Combined Schools' Jazz Big Bands. He has also been the musical director for 26 musicals and has worked as a musician in many professional music theatre productions (such as Cats and 42nd Street), performed on TV shows and his performance credits include working with the best of local artists (eg Tommy Emmanuel, Don Burrows, Jacqui Orzaczky, John Paul Young, Doug Parkinson, Ricky May, Julie Anthony, Barry Crocker, Little Pattie, Delilah and with the Don Lane Show).
Dev has also toured with various international artists such as The Supremes, The Drifters, Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, Johnny Tillitson, Francis Yip, Rene and Renata, The Italian Tenors, Demis Rousseau, Neil Sedaka and Melissa Manchester.
