Andrew Heading-Knight : Associate Artist

Different music has different purposes - some for entertainment, some to provoke thought, and so on. The things that all my compositions have in common are that they are written to the standard of the performers, they are interesting to both perform and listen to, and are melodic.

Andrew Heading-Knight is a Tamborine Mountain-based composer, arranger, musician and educator. Born in Sydney, he began music studies at an early age on the piano, adding trumpet, euphonium, trombone, harpsichord, cello, composition (under Ross Edwards) and percussion during his school years. He was also a solo artist (boy soprano) with the Australian Opera, performing in 8 operas over three years, and sharing the stage with singers such as Luciano Pavarotti. He attained his L.T.C.L. on trombone at the age of 14, and won both NSW State and Metropolitan championships on trombone and euphonium.

After leaving school, Andrew undertook an Honours degree in Science at the University of Sydney, and completed an Associate Diploma of Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Throughout this time, he tutored music at various private and public schools in Sydney, including The Kings School, Meriden College and the Hills Grammar School, and was a member of the band of the 1/15 Royal New South Wales Lancers.

In 1996, Andrew joined the RAAF Air Command Band as their bass trombonist, becoming the trombone section leader in 2000. Since then, he has appeared many times throughout Australia and across the world as a soloist with the Air Force bands, performing such works as the David Concertino for Trombone, and the Rimsky-Korsakov and Grondahl Concertos for trombone. In 2015, Andrew joined the Footscray-Yarraville City Band as their Solo Euphonium player, and in 2017, he appeared with both the Melbourne and Geelong Symphony Orchestras on euphonium and trombone respectively.

In 2019, Andrew retired from the Air Force, having completed thirty-one years of Defence service, and now spends his days looking after his puppy Lucy, and doing what he loves the most - performing, writing and teaching music.

Andrew's compositions include pieces for Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Band, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Ensemble, as well as chamber works for solo instruments and small groups. His Fantasy for Trumpet has been listed on the AMEB trumpet Certificate of Performance syllabus. His most recent work Jambreen was commisioned by the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra and will be premiered on 3 June 2023.
