Melbourne composer, violinist, and educator, Andrea Keeble (b.
1969) finds her compositions take form in the spaces where
performer and teacher coalesce in the pursuit of
self-knowledge.
Since joining the gypsy-style quintet, Cosmo Cosmolino, as a
composer-performer in 1998, she has composed for ensembles she is
a member of, including jazz sextet Collider. Andrea is the
Artistic Director of Keeble Collective (formerly Ad Hoc
Collective) founded in 2004 to bring together musicians,
composers and educators dedicated to performing, creating and
teaching new and improvised music. She independently released two
albums of original compositions, "Teeter" (2011), and
"Congratulations" (2017) as reviewed in AUSTA 'Stringendo'
magazine and JAZZ 'N' MORE (Switzerland). Two of her compositions
are currently in the AMEB Viola syllabus.
Andrea briefly co-founded a rock band, Stroll, whose original
music was finalist in the 'International Song-writing
Competition' (USA). This piece later became 'Pi Quartet'. The UK
dance company DV8 danced to 'Small Streets, Big Life' while on
tour for the Sydney Olympics, a piece originally composed for The
Big West Festival community theatre production. Andrea was
commissioned by the Festival of Slow Music (Ballarat) to compose
"Suite Actuality" - a seven movement work for String Quartet,
Voice (Freya Josephine Hollick) and Visuals (by Dotahn Capsi)
presented at the 2013 and 2015 festivals.
Andrea's recordings are included on Collider "Words" (2013), Silo
String Quartet "After the Dark" CD (2008), Stroll "Carnival of
Lost Souls" CD (2006), and on Cosmo Cosmolino's "Bel Air" (2011),
Aria nominated "Nektar" CD (2005) and "Streetsweeper" CD (2000).
Her music has featured on Damian Heffernan's independent dance
film "A Gentle Spirit" (2013), Pradeep Laxminarayana's Indian
Bollywood short film "The Blind Violinist" and performed by the
Bayside Chamber Orchestra and Castlemaine Chamber Players. She
has worked with The Salamanca Theatre Company (Hobart) as
composer and her compositions have been performed in numerous
concert series and festivals including the Sydney Festival, The
Southern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music Festival and
Merrepin Arts Festival (NT).
Andrea has taken many composition workshops in Melbourne, and
regional schools and orchestras, as well as indigenous
communities in collaboration with The Black Arm Band and The Fred
Hollows Foundation. She has worked as a lecturer in string
composition at Melbourne Polytechnic and continues to lecture at
The University of Melbourne (Master in Performance Teaching),
perform regularly as a guest violinist with the Melbourne
Symphony Orchestra and is an AMEB examiner.
