William Lovelock was educated at Emmanuel School, Wadsworth and Trinity College of Music, London, where he was subsequently a member of the teaching staff (1919-1956).

From 1939 to 1956 he was examiner in music, London University, where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Music (1954-1956). From 1956 to 1959 he was director of the Queensland State Conservatorium of Music. Following this he was active as a composer, adjudicator and examiner, as well as music critic of the Courier Mail in Brisbane. He was also the publisher of numerous textbooks.

Married 1926, Winifred Irene Littlejohn. On the death of his wife in 1981 he returned to England.

1941-1945: Indian Army Ordnance Corps in the rank of Major
