Sophie Min : Associate Artist

My perspective into new forms of creativity comes from the natural ambience of the room and dedication of participant musicians. Following faith and hope rather than worldly thoughts directs my compositional output and lifestyle.

Sophie Min is a young Korean-Australian pianist, composer and improvising artist whose work shows a distinctive personal aesthetic. Sophie is one of the most outstanding young jazz musicians in Australia. She has featured as one of the emerging talents of Australia on ABC Jazz in 2021.

Since she first emerged as a composer in 2015, Sophie has released several recordings: Bellwether, Solo Vol. 1, Thanks for The Hands, Min/Svoboda/Hawkins, and collaborative albums: Fine Gnaw and Move to the Bleat.
Her latest album 'Bellwether' (2020) for 12-piece ensemble, takes her own musical vision to a daring new place via innovative string and jazz atmospheres.

Sophie was selected as a 2020 Emerging Composer, mentored by Grammy-nominated pianist Barney McAll to write for "Pharos", which premiered at the 2021 Sydney International Women's Festival. She also won the International Composers Festival, Compfest (VIC) and was 3 time finalists for QMusic Awards.

Sophie enjoys engaging with other passionate artists and regularly contributes to concerts, workshops, interviews and virtual art projects. She has several commissioned works which include compositions for the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Pharos and EMO big band.

Recent achievements include earning a position in the JM Jazz World Orchestra and attending the Banff International Workshop; studying with Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey and Jen Shu. These experiences have only enhanced her desire to develop a unique voice as a performer and composer. She is currently continuing her masters research entitled 'Narrative Driven Practice: the Process of Arranging and Composing Music through Piano Improvisations' at the Queensland Conservatorium.

"Sophie Min may seem unassuming but when she writes music you witness a lion roar and you hear and feel a very evolved spirit expressing deep knowledge, passion and the mystery of our human condition" - Barney McAll

"'Bellwether', the genre-bending release, showcases Min's introspective numbers fleshed out with everything from vocals to electronics to a string quartet and is a true testament to her skills as both a performer and composer" - ABC Jazz
