Audrey Ormella : Associate Artist

I find inspiration in the natural world, in the invisible processes and relationships that exist between living things. I am also inspired by human experiences, literature and visual art, and enjoy finding strong concepts to ignite ideas.

Audrey Ormella is an emerging composer based in Sydney, Australia. Her practice is inspired by the environment, human experience, and conceptual thinking, which influence her developing compositional language.

Early opportunities have led to commissions and performances from Coro Innominata, Trinity College Choir from the University of Melbourne, and by soloists Anna Fraser and Jane Sheldon. She has worked with youth and children's choirs, including Gondwana Choirs, TheHouseThatDanBuilt ensembles, and the 2023 Cantabile Festival Combined Choir.

Complementing her developing vocal composition skills, Audrey has written for instrumental ensembles such as the String Quartet, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber ensembles. A 2024 highlight was the inclusion of her short piece in the Goldner String Quartet's "Goldner Variations" as part of their final performance season. Audrey enjoys working with unique colour combinations, having previously written for pipa and violin duo, as well as baryton and two solo sopranos.

In tandem with traditional instrumental pursuits, Audrey enjoys discovering new sound worlds in her practice. She experiments with electronic soundscapes, digital audio manipulation, and the creation of 'sound objects', having previously done so for Backstage Music in 2024. With a keen interest in exploring composition for stage, dance, film, and other media, she hopes to pursue these areas in her future work.

During her composition education, Audrey has had the pleasure of being mentored by Sally Whitwell, Paul Stanhope, Damian Barbeler, and Daniel Rojas, among others. This has been integral to the development and strengthening of her unique musical voice.

Audrey acknowledges the Wangal and Gadigal people, whose cultures and histories are embedded in the lands she lives and works on.
