Samuel Penderbayne was born in Canberra, Australia. Since 2024 he
is Professor for Composition and Artistic Research at the Music
and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna. His work seeks
humor, emotionality and the joy of experimentation. He is
especially interested in the connection between modern,
non-classical music genres and contemporary classical
composition.
With a speciality in opera and music-theatre, he has composed
over 10 full-length operas for venues such as the Zurich Opera
House, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the
Komische Oper Berlin, the Musiktheater Aalto, and the Hamburg
State Opera, often for young audiences, as well as concert music
for Ensemble Resonanz, Arditti Quartet, l'Orchestre
Philharmonique de Radio France and the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra, among others.
In addition to his classical music training, he has played in
prog rock bands, produced electronic dance music, and composed
film scores. He curates the biennial NORDLIED festival for
progressive art song in Hamburg together with the pianist
Henriette Zahn.
