Anna Robinson : Associate Artist

The intention to capture a young player’s imagination is at the heart of my compositions. Through musical imagery, character and storytelling it is hoped my pieces inspire creative playfulness at the piano and truly put the play back into playing.

Anna Robinson is a Northcote-based piano teacher and composer, and currently teaches piano at her private studio and two government primary schools in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

After graduating in Mathematics from University College London, she gained teaching and performing diplomas in piano and worked for some years as an administrator in classical music before deciding to focus solely on teaching.

In the teaching studio, Anna places an emphasis on developing music literacy skills so that young pianists may later enjoy the richness and diversity of the piano's repertoire. Her belief that engagement with repertoire plays a crucial part in sustaining students' interest led her to start composing pedagogical pieces for her students. Many of her works are inspired by observations of individual students' creative interests.

Over the past few years, Anna has self-published three books of original piano compositions. Notes on a Neighbourhood is a collection of early intermediate pieces inspired by observations of daily life around Northcote. Cats on the Keys and Pooches at the Piano are companion collections of elementary level pieces. Many pieces from her publications are included in the current piano syllabi for St Cecilia Examinations International, ANZCA Music Examinations and The Australian Guild of Music & Speech (AGMS).

Further highlights include commissions from Vibrant Music Teaching in Ireland to write pedagogical pieces for the Concept Colleciton series, the inclusion of pieces in AGMS's Piano Odyssey series, and The Scooter's Waltz receiving the runner-up award in the 2024 Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference's composing competition.
